Marion Cook from Hartley Wintney Country Market
Hampshire Country Market

“I have dabbled in making chutneys, jams and jellies for years. I started making chutney for my husband Steve's sandwiches and he’s become my taster for when I try something new. We’re both from a farming background; my mum and dad had a farm, first dairy, then hops and then a market garden so I grew up around bedding plants and veg. When Steve and I got married we decided to start a vegetable patch. It now provides all the vegetables I use in my chutneys and over time the plot has got larger as the sales of my chutneys have grown.

I joined Country Markets through a friend at ante-natal classes; her mum had been a member for years. I was invited to go along and have been a member myself now for nearly twelve years. Pickled Shallots are a favourite and I grow them myself. Some people say that once you’ve tasted Pickled Shallots you favour them any day over Pickled Onions – although I have to say that as my Onion Marmalade is very popular!

Steve and I also keep chickens, so I use their eggs in the cakes I make. Mum, my daughter and I all have a wheat free diet, so I make the cakes with gluten free ingredients and sell them at the Market too where there seems to be a growing demand for ‘free-from’ products.”
